Description: For nine months the allied forces tried to break through the German Gustav Line or the Winter Position, just north of Naples. After three failed attempts (four attempts according to German history) the allies tried once again. The US Fifth Army, which consisted of the US II Corps and the French Expeditionary Corps, attacked across the Rapido River and the Gustav Line South of the Liri River while the British Eighth Army was attacking the Gustav Line North of the Liri River. General Alphonse Juin, commander of the French Corps, lobbied heavily to attack through the mountains, saying that it would out flank the Germans and that they would be forced to withdraw from their positions in the Liri Valley. After much discussion they were allowed to do so. The US II Corps would attack the coast road, Highway 7 also know as the Appian Way. On May 11, 1944 the Allies were on their way, to breakout the beleaguered troops at Anzio and to free Rome from the grip of the Nazis.
